IAN GOODNOW of Brattleboro, Windham County, Democrat, was raised in Essex, Vermont, where he attended Essex High School and became an Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Vermont, where he received bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Russian Language. Ian taught English abroad and hiked the Appalachian Trail before moving to Brattleboro to enroll in the Vermont Law Office Study Program to pursue an alternate route to becoming an attorney. He clerked under his mentor, Attorney Thomas W. Costello, at his firm in Brattleboro. He successfully completed the program and joined the Vermont Bar in 2022. Ian’s law practice is primarily focused in criminal defense work. Ian served on the Brattleboro Selectboard from 2020–2024 and chaired the board for two years. As a Justice of the Peace, Ian serves as an election official, wedding officiant, and member of the Board of Civil Authority. He is a member of the Vermont Bar Association and the Windham County Bar Association. Ian and his wife, Ruth, live in downtown Brattleboro with their cat, Valentina. Member of House of Representatives: 2025–present.
